1 october 2008 - Craiova (RO) – depou/zajezdnia. An ex-Muenchen three-axle Rathgeber car outside the tramway workshops. This is actually car #664 with an identity crisis. Look closely and you’ll see that it is standing on temporary wheels – the reason for this is explained in my next photo.

1 october 2008 - Craiova (RO) – depou/zajezdnia. This is the very strange chassis of a Rathgeber three-axle tram. Note how the middle axle is free to steer left and right on curves. I think that, like some British trams of the 1920s, this arrangement isn’t very reliable and, unless maintenance is very good, the centre axle tends to lock in one position. The tram then becomes a very long, rigid six-wheeler and either come off the track or damages the rails. Romanian maintenance probably isn’t too wonderful, but at least they are trying……helped by a 2.5 litre bottle of beer, which is obviously essential!
