21 march 2010 - Portugal, Ribeira de Sintra: In recent years, the Sintra-Atlantico tramway has identified the need for more trams, as their 1903 Brill cars are rather small, low-powered and a bit scary to drive down the steeply-graded track, as they have only hand brakes. The solution has been to obtain some redundant Lisboa trams from Carris and re-gauge them to match the Sintra track - this is #100 of 1935, formerly Carris #709.

21 march 2010 - Portugal, Ribeira de Sintra: Still poking around the Sintra Electrico depot, here is a photo of an enclosed Brill trailer that hasn`t featured before on TWB. Like all the other original trams on this system, it came from Philadelphia, USA in 1903. Trailers aren`t often used now on the Sintra-Atlantico line, because the condition of the track and the steep gradient make it rather a nightmare for modern Health and Safety officers.

21 march 2010 - Portugal, Ribeira de Sintra: The Sintra tramway depot houses remarkable survivors. This line barely survived but, at the insistence of the local authority, was refurbished after several years of closure and now runs again from Sintra town down a steep and very tortuous track alongside the main road to the coast. Fortunately, the fleet of 1903-built, handbrake-only Brill trams has been kept intact and can still be ridden as they have been for over 100 years. Car #7, shown here, is a summer `toastrack` with open sides.

Dla turystów oczywiście największą atrakcją jest samo wybrzeże, ale dla komunikacyjnych maniaków trasa przejazdu z Sintry do Cascais to obowiązkowe `Must see" przy pobycie w Lizbonie :)

15 february 2014 - Sintra (PT). W przeciwieństwie do lat poprzednich, zdecydowano o kursowaniu tramwaju Sintra - Praia das Maçãs przez cały rok, tyle, że w okresie zimowym jedynie 3 kursy 1 wagonem, dla odmiany od okresu letniego zamkniętym i w dodatku debiutującym tutaj.

Zajezdnia.Po wykonaniu powyższego zdjęcia, z nienacka wyszedł do Nas pewien Amigo i łamanym angielskim zabronił mi oraz moim towarzyszom robienia zdjęć oraz kazał czym prędzej zabierać tyłek z "terenu prywatnego". Trochę dziwne, ze względu na brak jakichkolwiek tabliczek, znaków, piktogramów, min przeciwpiechotnych czy zwykłego ogrodzenia... Dobra, poniosło mnie :) Powiedział także, że nie wiadomo, czy tramwaj będzie uruchomiony w nadchodzącym sezonie. Mam nadzieję że tylko panikował. Szkoda że nie jeżdżą przez cały rok.

5 september 2010 - Praia das Maçãs, Av. Eugene Levy. Mimo całej "wioskowatości" tej sieci tramwajowej, ewidentnie zrobionej pod turystów, nie można odmówić jej paru zalet. Otóż dzięki tym tramwajom można dotrzeć z Lizbony nad ocean wyłącznie za pomocą transportu szynowego, a przy okazji zaoszczędzić parę Euro. Paradoksalnie ten turystyczny tramwaj jest tańszy od "normalnych" autobusów.

21 march 2010 - Sintra (PT). The 14 km long, metre-gauge Sintra-Atlantico tramway opened in 1904 with the original trams still working there today. The line actually closed down several times in the past fifty years, but somehow managed to survive and a major rebuilding is almost complete, with a new depot and improved track. It runs between Sintra town and the little seaside village of Praia das Macas along a hilly and winding route, mostly along the side of the road. Almost all the rolling stock, built by Brill of Philadelphia, is over 100 years old and (despite some steep gradients) is hand braked only. Here in the new depot are 1903 trams 1 and 7, open crossbench cars, and #4 which was rebuilt locally from an identical car. At the time of my visit there was no electricity, but the line will reopen for business in April – I’ll certainly be back! (this picture for af_robert).

Godzina szaleńczej jazdy po górach, dołach i zakrętach powoduje, że błędnik nie nadąża z przetwarzaniem informacji, a żołądek bezskutecznie szuka swojego miejsca ;-)
